New Year - New Start

Lois Butler - Tuesday, January 05, 2016

Have you had enough of winter yet?  I know I have.

During winter many of us tend to spend more time indoors browsing magazines and internet sites like Pinterest, resulting in a critical eye when it comes to our own home.  We feel the urge to refresh, redecorate, or declutter our living space.  As you are working towards simplifying and reordering your space, maybe you will find a few furniture pieces that you would like to sell.

From the start, our Consignment Service, has been a very successful venture. We have many satisfied buyers and sellers as quality pieces move from one home to another.  Right now we are particularly interested in smaller tables and storage pieces but we are still open to dining room sets and larger cabinets. These pieces are often sold just as they come into the store, but they are great candidates for "upstyling" and "repurposing"too.

Upstyling: Paint Techniques           Repurposing: Kitchen to Entry Way

Just send pictures of your items to consignment@loisbutler.com.  Please don't automatically decide that "they won't want this".  Just send your pictures and we will let you know what we are able to take.

This past year has been an interesting journey for us as we have expanded the scope of our business to include furniture consignment, custom woodwork, furniture transformations through painting techniques, and now painting classes (class schedule soon to be published).  All of these additions have been the result of our improved and enlarged location at 294 Lakeshore.  So feel free to come and browse anytime as stock rotates quickly and the some items hardly make it to the showroom before a very speedy exit transpires.

I'll end with a sample gallery of consignment, created, and transformed furniture that has passed through our doors.

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year and good luck with your decorating plans!

Setting the Look

Lois Butler - Tuesday, July 29, 2014
Beautiful elements always combine to make a great look.

Whether you want to host a brunch in the sun room,  enjoy a cosy cup of coffee in the kitchen, or sip wine at an elegant dinner party, we can help you achieve your look.

This handsome table gets a twist with chairs and benches.   Accents in mustard are evident in chairs, pillows, lanterns and vases.

This eye-catching 51" round mirror reflects charm and good design as well as lots of light.  Such a chic touch!

Pairing vibrant colour with weathered details and sleek silhouettes, creates a look with an eclectic and contemporary flair.

Design Trend - Self-expression

Lois Butler - Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Having absorbed the design lessons of HGTV and all our favourite decor magazines most homes are now decorated in a  fabulous neutral palette.  Walls have been painted some tone of beige, taupe or grey.  Large open bright spaces such as high ceiling condos have been painted white.  Let's not forget the dark brown leather or taupe sofa.  There has become a sameness in almost every home.

Recently, clients have started looking for decor items to interject personality into that fabulous neutral palette to make their space feel unique.  Many people don't realize that when looking in design magazines that it's often the smaller accessories or artwork that make us like the decor. These things give the room a personality.  We are seeing SELF-EXPRESSION as the big next trend in decor.

People are gravitating towards items that evoke an emotion.  Sometimes when a client asks me what is the purpose of an object I answer, "It makes me smile," and some days there is not a lot that does that.  So why not surround yourself with colour and objects that evoke positive feelings.  "Your home" should be just that - "your home" and not a museum.  Don't be afraid to interject some colour  and whimsy.  EXPRESS YOURSELF.

This elephant cushion from Cobistyle is subdued in its colours but it adds a touch of whimsy. For a collector of elephants it is also a subtle way to add to a collection.

One-of-a-kind objects definitely help to give a room personality.  We have been lucky at Boutique Lois Butler to acquire the works of a talented Quebec artisan.  These one-of-a-kind designs have added a new dimension to our boutique.   "It's a wonderful thing", as we would say in Newfoundland.  Using recycled wood (sometimes new when needed), salvaged items, and fantastic finds from nature,  this artisan's creativity knows no bounds.  One-of-a-kind objects like this will certainly up the SELF-EXPRESSION factor of your home.

This versatile grey box with its unique from nature handle will see you through the seasons.  Picture it filled for entertaining with jars of olives, hummus and bread sticks, etc.  Add foliage, silk or real, to reflect the season.  How amazing would it look as a centerpiece with fairy lights?  Just one item and you can be very creative in its use.  Remember, without creativity we will only have the mundane.

BE CREATIVE IN EXPRESSING YOURSELF AND HAVE FUN DOING IT.

One of a Kind Table Sets the Trend

Lois Butler - Monday, August 26, 2013
At Lois Butler's we have started to carry wonderful one-of-a-kind pieces made by a local artisan. He uses mostly reclaimed wood, but when necessary some new wood is used.  The table shown, with its rustic grey finish, is not only an example of his work, but it is right on trend in decor.
When you purchase a one-of-a-kind piece you give your home a "look" different from your friends and neighbours while supporting 2 local businesses (the artisan and the small independent retailer).

A lucky person  bought this table yesterday, so if you were considering it, so sorry, it's SOLD!.  However, we are always receiving new pieces.  Actually, we are presently restocking for the fall season so come on in and let us know what you think.  We are open today from 12 - 4:00pm. Hope to see you there.
